As they say, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
2022 is about to end in a few weeks, and 2023 is just around the corner. As 2023 approaches, businesses are beginning to prepare their business goals and set the path to take for the new year. Having a business goal is imperative, as it can give you and the whole team a clear focus and a basis to set targets to work on as well. Business goals can set you up for success.
What are business goals?
A business goal is an overarching outcome that a business wants to achieve in a specific period of time. Business goals can take many forms and be connected to financial, organizational, marketing, or employee-related.
Why are business goals important?
- Business goals set the direction of the company. It keeps everyone aligned on where the company wants to go and what it wants to be.
- Business goals help measure progress. These goals provide milestones that can help organizations measure their success or their setbacks.
- Business goals establish accountability. Business goals set everyone’s participation and accountability as it becomes everybody’s reference when creating departmental or individual goals.
- Business goals improve decision-making. These goals align leaders and management, which can be a basis when faced with decisions to make to ensure the business moves towards its target.
Here are some ways to help you plan your 2023 business goals.
Look at your company vision.
The first step in strategic planning is returning to your company’s vision. The company’s vision acts as your north star, and it will always remind you where you are heading and why you want to get there.
By taking time to reflect and analyze how you can make this vision into reality, you allow yourself to step back and think of goals for the year that may contribute to making you closer to achieving the vision. It is easy to get lost in what you want to aim for and achieve for 2023 but looking back at your company vision will align your goals to what is the ultimate destination for the organization.
Analyze past performance.
There is a lot of wisdom and learning you can get from looking back at the past. Analyzing past performance helps you understand best practices and success, as well as opportunities.
You may want to look at what you planned for 2022 and how you progressed against those business objectives. You can also review this year’s numbers, like metrics, revenue, customer and employee satisfaction, and the like. With these numbers and trends, what is a realistic goal for everyone for the next year?
Perform SWOT analysis.
This is somehow connected to our second tip. A SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This strategy helps businesses reveal blind spots that might have been missed out on by leaders. By going through a SWOT analysis, the organization can probe and unveil valuable information for the company and may help you set SMART goals. This can also help you think out of the box regarding goals and plans, as you are now given a new view of internal and external factors affecting the company.
Determine resources that you will need.
To make your goals complete, determine the resources that you have and what you will need. Ask yourself- based on what I want and need to accomplish, what am I missing? Where are you stuck given your current tools, knowledge, or time constraints?
Having a clear understanding of your resources will help you set goals on how to create or acquire your needed resources.
Create an execution plan.
Plans and goals can be good and crystal clear, but without an execution plan, this will all come to a waste. Act on your goals. Think of the people who will make the goals and plans a reality. Set concrete actions that can be done for the months, quarters, and the whole year. Propel your team and the whole organization to not just know the goals, but create their departmental, operational, and individual goals to help achieve the business goals.
Wrap Up
While we do not know what lies ahead, planning for the coming year can help you have solid business goals and take your company to success this 2023.
