As entrepreneurs who run their own full-time business, or side hustlers that have a part-time gig in addition to a day job, we’re often victims of what entrepreneur Chris Ducker calls “superhero syndrome.” Whether we’re working the 9 to 5 and freelancing on the side or have a six- or seven-figure business that we run, we think we can do it all when it comes to our work.

We’re not mere humans. We’re business superheros! Or so we think.

Or maybe you know you can’t handle everything. But you just don’t feel like we can trust other people to help us out.

Never mind that you’re not an expert in all the areas we need to be to have a successful venture — none of us has world-class knowledge on accounting, marketing, sales, productivity, management, and skills to handle every single aspect of our gigs. We might have two areas nailed down, maybe even three or four.

But all of them? Nope. Again, you’re not superhuman. (Sorry.)

The bottom line: we all only have so much time in a day or knowledge in our heads. We can’t know — or do — everything all the time, all at once.

When Wanting More Money Doesn’t Mean You’re Greedy

There’s been a lot of media write-up over studies that show Millennials would rather have fulfilling jobs with low salaries than jobs they didn’t enjoy but came with high salaries. Gen Y doesn’t seem to be as driven by money and success as they are by wanting to make a difference.

And there are existing stereotypes in place for creatives, for people working in nonprofits, for those who want to make a difference first and a living second. Think of the poor writer or the starving artist; we’re conditioned to think in order to do good, creative, or meaningful work in the world, that typically requires a conscious shunning of material wealth — and money.

Additionally, movements like Occupy Wall Street lead us to believe that it’s the majority of us against the minority of them, and the wealthy minority oppress the poor majority.

Combine these concepts and ideas, and you have many members of the Millennial generation who do actively think money is bad and evil. Or the only people who work to grow their own wealth do so because they’re greedy or driven by mixed-up priorities and values.

Entrepreneurship offers a lot of advantages. Personal freedom, fulfillment, and satisfaction are some of the biggest benefits of working for yourself.

But you’re also missing out on a few perks that make life just a little easier if you quit your job as an employee and strike out on your own. Think higher taxes, more expensive healthcare, and other financial hangups that happen to the self-employed (like having a hard time securing a loan because you don’t have three years of regular pay stubs to show you can reasonably repay money borrowed).

While some situations (and people) argue that it’s worth the trade-off, the reality is working for yourself is tough. It’s even harder if you’re not married or have no partner to help you handle expenses when your income can fluctuate from month to month.

The Fastest Way to Increase Wealth: Want Less

increase wealth image Personal finance often serve as great resources for those seeking to build wealth and improve their financial standing. The best bloggers offer practical advice and actionable tips while creating a welcoming community for anyone interested in money matters.

Another way bloggers help is by leaving all their details on the table. Money used to be considered a highly taboo subject; now, in the open, highly accessible digital age, we can see real-life examples of the where, what, when, why, and how of other people’s finances.

This is helpful because it provides us with a benchmark. But it can also be a little frustrating, because it’s all too easy to fall into the comparison trap.

It’s easy to get down on yourself and your own finances when you compare your net worth with personal finance bloggers who bare it all — and feel like you’ve come up short. Way short, in some cases.

This is especially frustrating when you feel like you’ve already tried to make an effort to increase wealth: you’ve cut overpriced services like cable. You’re paying down your debt so you stop losing money to interest. You’ve increased your retirement contributions or have moved some of your liquid assets into investments so they can start earning you a return.

Is Facebook Busting Your Budget?

Whether you love it or hate it, Facebook, and countless other social media platforms, are here to stay. It’s a new part of life in our modern, tech-driven society and culture.

Many fans of social media argue that these sites are just a new way of communicating, and that they can in fact improve our communication. By using Facebook, people actually have the opportunity to connect and keep up with far more people in their lives than they would have been able to fifteen or twenty years ago. And as humans, we do have a need for social interaction – and that’s exactly what social media is for.

Critics aren’t much impressed by that argument. They believe that interacting with people on Facebook and other social media platforms isn’t real socializing. It looks like it, it might feel like it – but there’s apparently no substitution for talking with someone “in real life,” or face to face.

Interestingly, the critics may be on to something. A study published in 2013 shows that the more someone engages with a site like Facebook, the less happy they become with their own lives. And other studies reported on in various popular media outlets associate Facebook with all kinds of negative emotions and affects, including feelings of jealousy and a subsequent reaction to that envy.
