These days the road to owning your own home can be more difficult than ever. Whether it’s the price of real estate in your area or the ever increasing requirements of lenders, many individuals are having a hard time achieving the American dream. However, if you’re not picky about location, you might just quality for a free piece of land, or even a free house. Several municipalities across the United States are offering up building lots for free.
Claremont, Minnesota
If you’ve ever dreamt of small town living, Claremont Minnesota could be the place for you. The town of Claremont, located approximately 30 miles from Rochester in south-eastern Minnesota, is giving away residential building lots for free. After the housing market crash in 2006, Claremont was left with 14 empty lots after a developer abandoned plans to develop the parcel. After being unable to sell the lots, the town decided to give the lots away for free. Claremont, which has seen a decline in population in recent years, is hoping this initiative will attract new residents.
Anderson, Alaska
In an effort to attract more residents, the town of Anderson Alaska is giving away housing lots. The 1.3 acre lots will be awarded on a first-come first-serve basis. Individuals who receive a lot have two years to build a home measuring at least 1,000 square feet. Power and phone hookups are available, and when you live in Anderson you don’t have to worry about property taxes, state income taxes, or sales tax. And even more savings can be realized by finding different ways to conserve energy at home. Although, there are no stores in the town of 367, so you’ll have to drive into the next town to get your groceries.
Detroit, Michigan
If Alaskan or small town living is not for you, consider a more urban area such as Detroit. Detroit has seen a fair share of housing troubles in the past few years, however an organization is working to improve the city one house at a time. The Detroit Write A House program is a non-profit organization that buys and renovates foreclosed homes. The organization then gives the homes to individuals involved in the literary arts such as fiction writers, journalists, poets, and more. These individuals must go through an application process, and once approved they are responsible for paying for their own insurance and taxes. Additionally, they are required to take part in local literary events and must live in the house for at least two years.
Beatrice, Nebraska
Beatrice might be the perfect mix between city and country life. The town has a population of over 12,500 and is only 40 miles from Lincoln. The town of Beatrice has created a new version of The Homestead Act, offering parcels of land for free to individuals who agree to occupy their home for five years. The act waives a $5,000 land fee if individuals obtain a building permit and build a home within a year. Occupants must live in the home for a minimum of three years. Most of the lots were made available by tearing down existing dilapidated homes. Unlike other towns giving away free land, Beatrice isn’t facing a declining population, instead hoping to clean up neglected properties and generate taxes and utility fees. Given it’s location and populous, Beatrice is considered among the more popular locations for free land opportunities.
Would you move to any of these places for the opportunity at free land or a free house?

I’ve been through Anderson several times, it’s not a bad spot at all. Kind of mosquito-y, but you can’t expect too much for free, eh?

Salmon, Idaho has a cave for 25 dollars a month. A state park pass is 255 a year which includes camping, hot showers, restrooms if you use solar power you can live pretty much for free. You can live on BLM land for free as well as National Forest and some Indian reservations you can live on for 89 dollars a year. You can by an acre of land in West Texas for 500 dollars and live there for ever with just 10 dollars a year in taxes just put a trailer on it with solar panels or build an Earth house for 300 dollars or less, get a water well and plant your vegetables and either hunt or fish for meat. Use solar and wind and there you go.
