The great thing about having your own side hustle is that you can pretty much choose whatever type of work you’d like. There is the creativity that comes with freelance writing, the work-at-home flexibility of being a virtual assistant, and the adventure of meeting and interacting with new people as a rideshare driver just to name a few.
I enjoy learning about the different ways people earn extra money on the side. There are hundreds if not thousands of way to earn a side income. Some side hustles are pretty straightforward, while some are downright strange! Check out these three odd side hustle ideas.
Research and Clinical Trials Participant
Researchers are always on the lookout for individuals to participate in studies, and most will compensate you for your time. Typically researchers look for healthy volunteers, as well as individuals with certain conditions such as diabetes or asthma to help them advance their knowledge and treatment of various conditions.
There are a number of different studies that recruit volunteers. Participation can range from simple activities such as answering computerized questionnaires about health behavior, to weekly visits that study the effects of certain medications, to testing the effectiveness and safety of experimental vaccines.
Keep in mind research and clinical trials require that specific measures are put in place to protect patient identity and safety. If you ever consider participating in a research study make sure you know as much as possible about the study, and feel comfortable addressing your questions and concerns.
Cuddling for Cash
Would you cuddle or snuggle a stranger for money? Cuddling services are increasing in popularity and popping up all over the country. When you work as a cuddler, your primary job is to hang out, talk, and cuddle platonically with clients both male and female, although most cuddle services report there are far more male clients than female. Nudity and sexual contact are strictly forbidden during cuddling sessions. Cuddling sessions can run upward of $80 an hour. Cuddle professionals started their business based on the belief that cuddling is a basic human need, and they see a big demand for non-sexual affection, touching, and intimacy.
If you’re a student who regularly attends class and takes notes, this could be the perfect side hustle for you. Some colleges have created programs that pay students to share their notes with peers. These programs link students note takers with peers who may need assistance with note taking due to a disability. After taking detailed notes, the note taker emails the notes to the student peer within a specified time frame. Additionally, there are multiple websites that students can register with to sell their notes. Students upload their notes, and are paid when those notes get purchased by another student. Students also have the option of creating note packets and study guides to sell in addition to their lecture notes.
The pay for note taking varies. Students registered through school programs can be paid upward of $80 a semester for sharing their notes, while students who upload and sell their notes can expect an average of a few dollars per download. Special tasks, such as creating exam study packets are usually paid in the $50-$75 range, and include commission on total sales.
Given there are so many options to make extra money it’s safe to say there is truly a side hustle for everybody out there.
