Working from home has become more accessible than ever before with better technology and recent events that forced us to do so. Many people can work from home during bad weather conditions, needing to stay home with a young child, recovering from surgeries for things like bunionettes or valve replacements, or even long commutes. Whatever the reason might be, there are a few things your home office must-have if you’re working remotely.
A Versatile Desk
While you could technically work just about anywhere in your house, like the couch, on the porch, or even in bed, having a desk where you can sit up straight and tackle a mountain of work is sometimes the best way to get the job done. But not just any desk will do. You need a desk that’s equipped with everything you’ll need, like ample space to work, drawers to quickly store and get things you need, a desk lamp, and room to set a coffee—or two.
A Comfortable Chair
What’s a great desk without a comfortable chair? If you intend to sit in the same spot (more or less) for at least eight hours out of the day, several days a week, it’s important that you are comfortable doing so. This isn’t just about comfort, although you should be, it’s about maintaining a good posture so that you don’t develop back or neck problems from hunching over the keyboard. This doesn’t mean you have to dish out $500 for the perfect chair, but don’t skimp out on it either.
A Way to Fight Distractions
Getting distracted is easy enough as it is, but this seems to be even more prominent when working from a home office. The noises never stop—whether it’s your kids yelling, dogs barking, or horns honking—and being home can make you feel like your chores should be attended to, like cleaning the dishes, vacuuming the house, or preparing dinner. It’s crucial that you have a way to fight these distractions, otherwise, you’ll find yourself derailed from your work and tumbling down a rabbit hole of endless procrastination.
One way to fight this is by blocking out all that noise with a pair of high-quality headphones, ones that won’t bother your ears from prolonged use and can cancel external noise. You can listen to podcasts, music, background noise, or anything else that you can possibly think of. Shutting the door and mentally closing yourself off from those distractions is another useful method. Setting a blocker for certain apps on your phone during particular times of the day can be utilized as well. Do whatever you have to do to fight distractions.
The Grind Never Stops
Working from home can be a very convenient way to get your job done if you are restricted from going into the office for one reason or another. As long as you’ve got all these necessities, you’ll set yourself up for success while working from home.
