Career success in Corporate America is dependent on a number of things, not least talent in a particular area. You can be a whizz at playing the financial markets or seriously savvy at marketing, but if you don’t have the right educational background, it may be difficult to persuade some companies to give you a start.
People with a degree are more likely to achieve career success. Graduates find it easier to get a job; they also go on to better-paid jobs. This is not to say that a degree is your gold card into a dream job, but it does open more doors. Unfortunately, not all degree courses are equal. Studying Art History or Paleontology for four years will be fun, but it won’t get you as far as a business degree, so if you have a burning desire to be the next big thing in business, here are the top degree subjects to study at university.
Business and Administration
A degree in business and administration will give you an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of business. Business and administration is a broad subject, but graduates with this degree under their belt will have no problem securing a job in any business field. It’s also a good foundation for a master’s in business administration.
Marketing
An online marketing degree is an excellent basis for a career in marketing and PR. Marketers understand how to sell a product. For many businesses, selling a product or service is a critical part of their success. If you want to do well, earn a bachelor of science in marketing from a reputable university and wait for the job offers to come flooding in.
Law
If there is one degree guaranteed to secure you a well-paid job, it’s a law degree. There are numerous areas of law to specialize in, but graduates with a business law degree should have no problem finding a job. You could also go on to study for an MBA if you want to improve your career prospects.
Accounting
Money makes the world go round and in many top businesses, the accountants are very much in charge. Accountants understand the intricacies of cash flow, taxation and other important subjects. It’s all very well being good at schmoozing with clients and doing deals in the board room, but if you don’t know where the money comes from – or where’s it is going – your business is unlikely to succeed. Study for an accounting degree and you will do well in the corporate world.
STEM subjects
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are very much in demand, yet US schools are underperforming in this crucial area. STEM subjects are the foundation stone of the industrial and corporate world. STEM degrees hone a student’s analytical skills. You need a strong attention to detail if you study for a science, math, tech or engineering degree. Social sciences in particular are popular with business recruiters. With a math, engineering, tech or science degree under your belt, you should go far.
Choose your degree subject wisely as it will influence which direction your career takes.
