When you are living on financial assistance, finding ways to have fun can feel overwhelming. Most people have the mindset that if you do not have money to spend, you cannot have fun. This simply is not true. There are many ways you can have fun this summer without spending much (or any) money. Low Income Financial Help has provided a great list of proven fun activities that everyone can enjoy without a hefty price tag.
Take the plunge and try one of these free or cheap activities:
Go swimming: Grab your swimsuit, towels and a cooler full of food and head to the beach for a day of swimming, building sandcastles and sunbathing. The classic summer activity is a classic for a reason. Don’t feel like getting in the waves? Grab a book and dip your toes in the water while you enjoy the latest novel from the local library.
Enjoy Mother Nature: Head out and explore the wonderful country around you. There are hikes, trails, historical sites and more that are free to see. When is the last time you really explored the area you live in? Head over to local lakes, beaches, rivers and have a great day out exploring. In addition, checkout local galleries and community events, most cities have numerous free family events on during the summer.
Barbecue: One of the best parts of summer is enjoying the smell of beef roasting on the barbecue. Grab a few steaks, burgers or your favorite meat and make a night of it, right in your own backyard. Invite a few friends over for a potluck and enjoy good conversation and great company on the cheap.
Paint with water: If you have kids, they will love this idea. Grab paintbrushes and/or spray bottles and head out to your driveway or the sidewalk in front of your home. Encourage your little ones to paint their best picture with water. If you want to enjoy the artwork a little longer, you can grab a box of colored chalk and get to decorating.
Movie night and s’mores” Build a fort in the living room, melt some marshmallows and enjoy a movie night in. You can easily toast marshmallows for your s’mores in a fireplace or even over your gas or electric stove. If you use your stove, simple place your mallow on a fork and hold it over the burner. Do not forget the oven mitts, your hands will get toasty.
Check out local festivals: Check your local newspaper for upcoming festivals or farmers markets. Festival admissions are usually free and you can explore booths at your leisure. If you can, set aside a little cash to enjoy some street food while you wander around.
Get crafty: Learn a new craft. There are many ways to get crafty for cheap. Check out the library for a book of kids crafts. You can easily adopt these crafts to more adult designs, but they can be a little cheaper than some other adult projects.
Camping: Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and have an exceptional time making memories with family and friends. While camping can get expensive, it can also be very affordable – it’s really what you make of it.
Summer is a great time to get out and explore the world. Exploration does not have to be expensive, just creative. The above are just a few examples of great ways to have loads of fun without breaking the bank.
What are some of your favorite summer time activities?
