Do you work a lot trying to save for your retirement?
When was the last time you took a vacation or treated yourself with a simple weekend getaway?
Because of our responsibilities, sometimes we forget to live. We can be so busy planning for the future that we take the present for granted.
“I need to save for my emergency fund.”
“I need to secure an insurance.”
“I need to prepare for my retirement.”
These are great goals to have but make sure while you’re preparing your way to financial freedom, you’re still enjoying life.
Yes, you can have financial freedom without being stingy. We don’t have to deprive ourselves of the good things in life for fear of losing money. We just need to be smart in handling our finances.
So how can we save and at the same time enjoy?
Try these simple tips.
Exercise regularly
Do you know that exercise helps release happy hormones called endorphins?
It minimizes stress levels, too. Walk or bike your way to your office if possible and cut down on transportation expenses.
Instead of applying for a gym membership, exercise at home or run around your neighborhood. Do this with family and friends and exercising will be a lot more fun!
Live a healthy lifestyle
Most medical ailments are attributed to stress. make sure you have enough time to rest and sleep.
Avoid fast foods. Pizza and burgers taste good so they’re hard to resist but be extra cautious. Watch your calories and cholesterol. Getting sick means medical expenses which we both know are not cheap.
Eat vegetables and cook nutritious foods instead of eating out. Plan your meals ahead. Buy in bulk but make sure not to waste it. Also, pack your own lunch.
Do you have an outdoor space or a backyard? Try growing your own vegetables. A few pots for herbs and lettuce will do. Who knows, you might discover you like farming and turn this into a healthy hobby!
Limit your alcohol intake and give up smoking. You’d be surprised by the amount you’ll be saving!
Travel wisely
Exhausted at work? Escape from stress by going to places you’ve never been to. You deserve it!
Traveling need not be expensive. Airfare is cheaper if you plan your trip ahead of time. Research your destination so you won’t need to hire tourist guides. Besides, a DIY tour can be more exciting! Don’t travel during the holidays but during the slow season. Instead of booking for hotels, try transient houses or Airbnb
Reward yourself
Set aside a portion of your paycheck first on savings and investments to secure your future. These are more permanent gifts or rewards to give yourself. After paying yourself first and your bills, what’s left can be used on spending for your wants. It’s time to shop for those new jeans or a new bag. This way, you won’t feel guilty to spend your money.
Make a budget. Have a “want fund”. This doesn’t need to be big but just a small portion of your income. If you deprive yourself, how will you motivate yourself to work more?
Tip: Take advantage of sales and discounts. Compare prices and avoid impulse buying. Use vouchers or coupons. And if possible, try to negotiate prices.
Find a job you enjoy
If you enjoy work, it won’t be that stressful.
Many people get stuck in a job they don’t love. They drag themselves out to work every day. Lucky you if you are not one of them.
Good thing if you can still shift to another job, but if not, find a hobby to destress or make friends with co-workers to overcome pressure at work.
Live simply
Have you ever did a lifestyle check?
Living frugally doesn’t mean you’re unhappy. Most of the time, little things mean much more.
Don’t live beyond your means. Living simply is beautiful.
Just remember, you only live once. You deserve to be happy and you have the right to taste the fruits of your hard work! Find the balance in everything that you do.
Saving should not be a burden but a reward.
